The Best Way to Eat a Crawfish
If you’re a crawfish fanatic, it’s likely that you’ve heard more than a few opinions on the best way to eat them. After all, cracking open and extracting the meat from a mudbug is not as simple as eating other types of foods. Here is a method that will guarantee the biggest return on your efforts.
- Start by grabbing the crawfish with your left hand on the head and your right hand on the tail (assuming you are right-handed)
- Gently push the tail section into the head to loosen the meat a little
- Now twist of the tail and remove it
- Use your thumb and forefinger to squeeze the sides of the top of the tail and crack it
- Remove the first two rungs of the tail shell and extract the meat
For Seasoned Pros
You now know the basics of peeling and eating crawfish. However, there are a couple of more things that you can do with the mudbugs if you’re feeling brave. First, you can suck the head. It sounds way worse than it is. Crustaceans don’t have “brains” in the same way that we do. Essentially, you’re just sucking out the concentrated spices and seasonings for a jolt of flavor.
If you want to take it one step further, you can insert your finger into the head to extract the small fatty ball inside. This organ functions similar to a human liver and is known as “crawfish butter.” Think of it as a poor man’s foie gras.
One final pro tip is to extract the meat within the crawfish’s claws. It’s a little extra work, but you’ll get the most out of your fish this way.
