Tips For Cleaning Up After Christmas

cleaning after Christmas party

The beginning of the year is a great time to do a quick refresh on your home. While you’re packing up all of your holiday decorations you can purge some of the things you don’t need and declutter your home. Follow these tips to complete a quick post-holiday cleanup.

Declutter

Out with the old and in with the new. It’s common to accumulate a lot of things during the holiday season. You might find that you have an excess of food containers from potlucks you’ve hosted. Maybe you’ve attended several parties during the season and now you have far too many party favors. All of these things combine to make your home much more cluttered than when the holidays began. Start your decluttering process by tossing out all of the trash from unwrapped presents. That includes delivery boxes, wrapping paper, ribbons, and bows. Next return all of the borrowed or forgotten food containers lingering in your kitchen. Finally, store all of your holiday decorations and replace them with your regular home décor.

Deep Clean Your Kitchen

If there is one room in your house that needs a little extra attention after the holidays, it’s your kitchen. After you’ve baked several cakes and pies and all of your relatives have gathered to help make Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, your kitchen appliances will need to be cleaned. Start by cleaning out your refrigerator and your freezer. Then move on to your other appliances. You can use the self cleaning setting on your oven, dish washer, and coffee maker.  Then disinfect your counters, cabinets, and drawers.

Clean Your Carpet and Upholstery

Another area that might need attention after the holidays is all the fabrics in your home. Your curtains, carpet, upholstery and rugs are all likely to have a few stains and need a little freshening up. First, spritz your curtains and fabric upholstery with water and essential oils. Choose a light scent like lavender, mint, or eucalyptus. Then spot clean any stains in your fabrics. Once you’ve removed the stains, vacuum the fabrics.

Now that your home is clean and refreshed your ready to take on a whole new year.
