This year is flying by, and we’re now halfway through 2023. We’ve also reached the start of summertime, as the hottest season officially begins on June 21. Now that the weather is warm and sunny and the kids are out of school, you might be looking for a few ways to keep everyone entertained and active for the next few months. VeryWell Family has put together a long list of things to do during the summer, so take a look around and plan some fun activities for the whole family!
Go Exploring
When the weather’s nice, you and your family might feel the call of the wild, so head out and take a stroll for some fresh air. You could head to the coastline for a casual walk along the water’s edge, stopping to the collect shells scattered along the beach. Alternatively, you could head inland and go for a hike down a nature trail. There are some wonderful hiking spots all around Fort Walton Beach, like the Glenwood Park Nature Trail or the Timberlake Trailhead. These trails offer an unspoiled look at the natural beauty of our community, and you might catch a glimpse of the region’s wildlife as you explore. Just make sure everyone’s socks and boots are fitted well to keep anyone from getting sore as you cover ground.
Embark on a Camping Trip
If an afternoon hike in the woods isn’t enough time out in nature, you could extend your visit with a camping trip this summer. Camping is a great way to cut the commute out of a long weekend of fun in the sun, on the water, and out in nature. As you look for a campground, consider the outdoor activities that your family enjoys the most, then pick a site that offers easiest access to those activities. Whether you want go fishing, boating, hiking, or just unplug for a while, there’s bound to be a campsite nearby that facilitates the adventure you want. If you like the idea of roughing it but need to stay close to home, you could set up a tent out in your own yard, with all the comforts of home just a few feet away. If the weather turns nasty, you could even move the excursion indoors for a living-room campout.
Take a Look in a Book
School’s out for the summer, but if your family loves reading, they can keep their imaginations primed with a book just for the summer break. Make a trip to the library to help them find a few books on topics that interest them, or let them discover an engaging story in the fiction sections. If your kids are not at a reading age, let them pick out a few bedtime stories.
