Visit Crab Island for a Day’s Worth of Fun

Crab Island in Fort Walton Beach

The best islands are ones that don’t actually exist. That’s the case in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, at least. Crab Island is an underwater destination that draws locals and tourists alike. But don’t spend your day just floating around – there’s way more to Crab Island than that.

An Underwater Island

Crab Island is a bit of a misnomer. The popular boating destination was a true island as late as 1964, but due to naturally drifting sands from the Gulf of Mexico, it has now transformed into an underwater sandbar. The island’s disappearance has only made it more popular. Today, Crab Island offers waist-deep water that’s perfect for anchoring a boat. It’s only accessible via watercraft, so if you don’t have a boat, try renting one for the day. If you’re feeling sporty, stand up paddle boards and kayaks are another option for reaching the sandbar.

The best time to visit is during high tide. Only then does the water turn the clear, beautiful green that the Emerald Coast is known for. Check out this tide chart to find out the best days to visit at high tide. The busiest season for Crab Island is between Memorial Day and Labor Day, but try going on a Friday if you’re looking for a quieter experience. Make sure to take a look at the Crab Island Facebook page for updates on closures due to weather or marine life concerns.

Crab Island Attractions

There’s more to do than anchor and float at Crab Island, although you could have plenty of fun just doing that. While you’re there, swim over to hear the live music at the floating stage. You can grab a drink at one of the floating tiki huts, along with ice cream, sandwiches, and other summertime snacks. Bring an inner tube if you want to kick back and drift off. For the kids, Crab Island Water Park is near. The park is made up of floating slides, obstacles, and trampolines that let kids burn off some extra energy while the adults relax. Prices are $15 per child for a 1-hour armband or $20 for a 2-hour pass.
