This time of year summer is out the door and fall is waiting just around the corner! It can be a weird time for produce, but nevertheless August brings a few solid foods that are freshest during the late summertime. Here’s just a few fresh items to incorporate into your meals this month.

Fruits

To start off, lemons and limes are in their prime right now. Stock up on recipes that use fresh lemon or lime juices/zests and you’ll give any dish a boost of the freshest flavor! Fuji apples, grapefruit, strawberries, and pineapple are all in season right now, so try cutting up equal parts of those and making a fruit salad to please any crowd or craving. Blood oranges and navel oranges make great snacks and are the most in-season right now as well!

Veggies

Lots of great vegetables are in season right now! If you’re a veggie lover or enjoy cooking, you’ve got a lot to work with. A few awesome side-dish-worthy items include broccoli, carrots, Brussels sprouts, spinach, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, broccolini, and Jerusalem artichokes. All of these can easily be roasted in the oven with a splash of olive oil and a dash of some simple spices like salt, pepper, paprika, onion powder, and whatever else you put on your favorite sides! In-season showstoppers such as potatoes and pumpkin work well for main meal items, especially for your vegetarian friends. Feeling snacky? Try munching on celery, cabbage, and Dutch carrots. And lastly, spice up any savory dish with leeks, onion, ginger, garlic, and brown onion. They’re all in season, and add tons of flavor.
